St. Tammany’s Lago Fest will take place on Sept. 21 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mandeville Trailhead with loads of vivacious, energetic, live Latin music; salsa and bachata dance lessons for all levels; delicious Hispanic food with plenty of cooking demonstrations; Latin merch for sale; and plenty of kid’s activities, including face painting, an inflatable slide, a bounce house and more.
In addition, award-winning author Yvette Zuniga Jemison will be selling and signing her cookbook, “My South Texas Kitchen,” featuring her family’s Mexican-American recipes from south Texas, as well as her husband’s New Orleans family recipes offering a taste of Cajun and Creole cuisines.
This family-friendly festival is the brainchild of Dayhanna (Dayha) Velandia from Bogota, Colombia, and Trevor Darling, from Covington. The couple met at Dayhanna and her mother’s Covington restaurant, Casa Leon, shortly before COVID. They married and today have three boys under the age of 2 — twins Emmanuel and Raoul, their youngest, Nicholas, and Dayhanna’s 17-year-old daughter, Annie.
The couple created the festival to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on the northshore to keep the Colombian culture, food, music and traditions alive for their children as they grow up in Louisiana. Additionally, they want to blend the Hispanic community with the northshore community, hoping everyone can work together for the common good.
Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua; Mexico’s is Sept. 16, while Chile is Sept. 18 and Belize, Sept. 22.
La Tran-K band, Julio & Cesar Band, and Jose Fermin Ceballos are among a full slate of musicians who will entertain.
The event begins at 3 p.m., with special events and music running through the rest of the afternoon and evening. Those include:
