Matagalpa (Agenzia Fides) – “The principle of human dignity is fundamental to the reconstruction of a country. Respect for the person and his or her dignity must be the axes around which all efforts must revolve so that they become the basis of every social organization. Man is the image of God, this means that he is endowed with immense dignity, and when man is offended … God is offended too”, affirmed Bishop Rolando J. Álvarez of Matagalpa in his homily on Sunday 9th January in the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
Referring to the meaning of the feast, the Bishop said: “On this day of the Holy Trinity Revelation, we can pray to the Father through the intercession of His Son, who sent his Spirit to our country and pray for Nicaragua, where they must be laid solid and fundamental foundations; two of these are the principle of human dignity and the principle of freedom”.
“Freedom is another pillar on which Nicaragua must be rebuilt, it arises from respect for dignity” he added, quoting Pope John Paul II: “Freedom is the measure of human dignity and greatness of peoples”. Without freedom, the option of a new country cannot be realized. Freedom enables every society to grow; it brings with it a feeling of individual and social responsibility, because man works conscientiously for his own good and for the common good”. Before the final blessing, the Bishop presided over the act of sending the Youth Pastoral (PJ) group, on behalf of the PJ Diocesan Commission, sent on mission in the week from January, 9 to 15. The young people from the various parishes and communities will participate in various activities, in full compliance with safety regulations: moments of prayer, virtual talks on the theme “Mission and communion of the young Church”, cultural night, charity initiatives. On Saturday January 15th, a delegation will attend the official closing Mass at the Shrine of the Lord of Esquipulas. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 13/1/2022)
