Managua (Agenzia Fides) -Monsignor Carlos Enrique Herrera Gutiérrez, Bishop of the Nicaraguan diocese of Jinotega, was elected new president of the Bishops’ Conference of Nicaragua for the period 2021-2024, during the annual Assembly of Bishops held in recent days. Monsignor Herrera, OFM, was born in Managua on December 21, 1948, was ordained a priest on January 10, 1982 and Bishop on June 24, 2005. He studied philosophy at the Salesian Philosophical Institute of Guatemala and specialized in Family Pastoral Care, obtaining a diploma in Pastoral Theology, in Colombia. He is also president of Caritas Nicaragua. According to the statute, as reported by the statement of the Bishops’ Conference sent to Fides, during the meeting of the Bishops the various positions for the next three years were also renewed, from November 2021 to November 2024. Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes was appointed Vice-President of the Bishops’ Conference Solórzano, Archbishop of Managua and outgoing President. Monsignor Jorge Solórzano Pérez, Bishop of the diocese of Granada, was appointed Secretary General, and the Bishop of Juigalpa, Monsignor Marcial Humberto Guzmán Saballos, Treasurer. The Bishops responsible for the different pastoral areas and sectors have also been appointed.
The new presidency of the Bishops’ Conference begins its work a few days before the November 7 elections, called to elect the President of the Republic, 90 deputies of the National Assembly and 20 members of the Central American Parliament. Daniel Ortega, president, and his wife Rosario Murillo, vice president, will continue to lead Nicaragua for another term, according to official data.
