Managua (Agenzia Fides) – Yesterday, Sunday 24 November, Fr. Edwing Román, parish priest of San Miguel in Masaya, informed through his Twitter account that his health is improving and will soon return to his parish in Masaya. After spending eight days without water, without electricity, with nothing to eat and even without his medicines, Father Edwin and relatives of political prisoners were taken away from the church of San Miguel in Masaya on Friday, November 22, while they were thanking those who had supported them with prayers and in other ways. At the Vivian Pellas Hospital where they were hospitalized, some journalists managed to exchange a few words with Father Edwin and with Diana Lacayo, president of the Association of relatives of political prisoners.
The priest and other people in the group were taken to the hospital with the help of the Nicaraguan Red Cross. Currently, Father Roman continues to be hospitalized as, being diabetic, he is among the most tried by the police prohibition of receiving food, water and medicine, according to what the archdiocese of Managua and Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes himself inform, who went to visit him yesterday.
Father Edwing was part of a group of 14 people who stayed in the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, in the city of Masaya, for eight days. Among them at least 10 women had started a hunger strike to demand the release of over 160 political prisoners. The police arrested 16 people for trying to bring water to the people inside the parish, after the water and electricity supply to the building was interrupted. Supporters of the police and government gave access to the media.
This action by family members of political prisoners is not isolated, but is one of the many protests against the political and social crisis that since April 2018 has left at least 328 dead, according to the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IACHR), although the organizations local numbers increase to 651 and the government recognizes 200 (see Fides, 29/10/2019).
