Managua (Agenzia Fides) – On Saturday 30 June Pope Francis will receive Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes Solorzano, Archbishop of Managua, President of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua and of the Commission for National Dialogue in audience, together with Mgr. Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, Bishop of Matagalpa and member of the same Commission.
The journey of Cardinal Brenes is motivated by his presence at the Consistory of Cardinals convened by the Holy Father for the appointment of new Cardinals, but during a private audience he will inform the Pope about the “painful situation that the Nicaraguans live” and on the dialogue proposed by the Catholic Church and supported by the trust of the population, as stated in the statement sent to Fides by the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN). “During their absence – continues the communiqué – Mgr. Bosco Vivas Robelo, Bishop of the diocese of León, will assume the presidency of the Commission for National Dialogue”.
Unfortunately, there are episodes of violent repression against the population, causing 3 deaths a day. President Ortega does not respond to the Bishops’ request to stop this violence.
Through social networks Agenzia Fides continues to receive news of this terrible situation: young people and even children were killed in a violent manner last week. Stopping the repression is the first condition to continue dialogue, and the second is to hold early elections. Today, Tuesday, June 26, the meeting of the members of the Dialogue Table with representatives of international organizations for the defense of Human Rights is scheduled.
