Every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the rich stories, culture and contributions of Latinos in the United States.
This celebration coincides with the independence anniversaries of nine Latin American countries: Belize, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua.
Many festivities begin annually with a commemoration of “El Grito de Dolores,” which translates to the cry of independence. This event sparked Mexico’s fight for freedom under Spanish rule. On Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in Dolores, calling upon the townspeople to rise up and fight for liberty. The powerful cry marked the beginning of a 10-year war that ultimately secured Mexico’s independence.
Today, El Grito is re-enacted in towns across Mexico and around the world, including in Portland, where thousands gather to celebrate the important Mexican holidays.
Across Oregon, Latino people come together to celebrate with a variety of vibrant events. Here are some of the upcoming highlights you won’t want to miss.
Portland
Milagro: Milagro will be staging the play “The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/LatinX/Latine Vote” starting Sept. 5 with special events including an opening night reception, playwriting workshop, a playwright and actor talkback and a panel discussion with community leaders.

From the Westside wit Love is hosting an art exhibition shining a light on creatives from Portland’s westside with photographers, vendors, food and live DJs.

El Grito Ride: Cyclists are invited to participate in the annual Grito Ride “Vaquero Edition” hosted by Cycle Homies. The event includes a four-six mile ride and an after-party, featuring food from Taco Gang PDX and music by Grupo Anexo Oficial. Participants are encouraged to wear vaquero attire. The ride is 21+ and all wheels are welcome.

El Grito: Organizers bill this annual event as the largest, fully-Latinx-owned, organized and executed event in the Northwest, kicking off National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations by commemorating the fight for Independence in Mexico and seven other Latin American countries. Activities include a ceremony reenacting Mexico’s Declaration of Independence, entertainment, food, dance, live music, children’s activities and contests.

Rockwood Market Hall Music Series: Rockwood Market Hall will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a performance by local artist Victoria Fragoso. The live performance will offer a laid back atmosphere with the opportunity to purchase food from the market’s diverse vendors.

Portland Latin American Film Festival: For the past 18 years, this film festival has been a cornerstone event at the Hollywood Theater, showcasing contemporary Latin American cinema, with a lineup of nine film screenings.

Nuestra Cultura:JuntosPDX is collaborating with From the Westside wit Love to host its third annual event celebrating Latino Hispanic Heritage in Oregon. This one will feature an art showcase, interactive art activations and food vendors.

Fiesta Latina en el Parque: North Clackamas will host a family-friendly party with food, music, arts and crafts and kids activities to celebrate Latino culture and heritage in North Clackamas.

Art Exhibition: The Brookwood Library will host an art exhibition focused on Hispanic culture, including a short film screening, a live dance performance and an art gallery. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss the works with the artists.
