Cigar shop and lounge Davidus Cigars is now open at 1011 Light St. in Federal Hill. The one-story, approximately 3,000 sq. ft. retail building was previously the home of a real estate office.

Davidus Cigars was started in Frederick, MD in 1996 by bothers David and Steve Castro. They now have 13 locations with the opening of the Federal Hill shop.

There is also a Davidus Cigars location in Little Italy at 1300 Bank St. in a building slated for redevelopment. Upon hearing the news of the redevelopment, Steve Castro began looking for a new building for the Baltimore shop and decided to buy 1011 Light St. The Little Italy shop currently remains open as a start date for the redevelopment has not yet been scheduled.

Steve Castro said they spent almost $200,000 transforming the former real estate office into a cigar shop and lounge. This includes new flooring, humidors, cabinets, proper ventilation, a mezzanine, a bar, and new paint, as well as lounge chairs, televisions, and tables.

Davidus Cigars is “a premium, luxury cigar shop where every cigar is hand-rolled,” said Steve Castro.

Davidus Cigars sells more than 1,000 different cigars ranging in price from $5 to more than $100 from labels such as Padron, Perdomo, Arturo Fuente, Sea Knight, and more. The Castros started their own brand, Lord Baltimore Distributors, more than 15 years ago and make cigars labels such as Castro Brothers, Lord Baltimore, Breakfast Bliss, and the Civil War Series.

Lord Baltimore was a popular cigar brand in America in the 1800s but dissolved after World War II. The Castros were able to buy the trademark before starting the business. The Lord Baltimore cigars use tobacco from farms they’ve visited in Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic. Wrappers comes from other countries as well as domestically from Connecticut.

Along with cigars, Davidus Cigars sells pipes and pipe tobacco.

Steve Castro said Davidus Cigars’ number one competition is the internet, so they take pride in customer service, their knowledge of the products, and having a selection of cigars only sold in their store.

Davidus Cigars is BYOB and customers can also bring in their own food. Steve Castro said they would love to eventually get a liquor license.

Davidus Cigars is open Monday to Wednesday from 10am to 9pm, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 11pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
