Good surprises are always welcome. One such surprise was a recent interview I had with Gabriela Tapia, executive vice-president of Grupo Industrial El Granjero, the largest egg producer in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua still has a low per capita egg consumption rate. As per the latest data I gathered in 2022, average consumption is only 94 eggs per person. It is the lowest in the region, but it demonstrates the potential for producing eggs there.
Tapia holds business administration degrees in the U.S. and Spain and has a clear view of the family business. She is a reserved person that enjoys being an executive more than appearing in photos and has a humble, but assertive, attitude for herself and the egg business.
El Granjero has 800,000 laying hens in production for white and brown eggs. Located in the region of Masaya, next to the capital city of Managua, El Granjero has completely automated its egg production farms (integrated with SAP) managed with solar energy. Each farm classifies and carefully packages the eggs. Each egg carries a seal of the brand and traceability record. Data management – from production to marketing – allows the company to make decisions.
The company has a wide distribution system all over Nicaragua to supermarkets, pulperías (corner shops) and even its own egg stores. In addition, back in 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic, it developed a home delivery service, a distribution channel that has been strengthened in the past few years.
But not only that, El Granjero also has an egg processing plant where it produces egg products such as liquid egg whites and powdered eggs, marketed under its own brand in retail and for baking companies and others. The company is authorized to export to nine different countries in the region, a reflection of its quality and service.
A company like this shows how things can be done. Kudos!
