Hispanic Heritage Month will have its celebration at the CMU Plaza from 5:30 — 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a national celebration which covers the month running from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. This 30-day period is significant because it includes the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It also includes Dia de la Raza (Columbus Day) on Oct. 12.
National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the history and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from South America, Central America, the Caribbean and Spain; noting the difference between Hispanics and Latinos, a news release said.
“Sept. 15th marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates and honors the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans who have enriched our culture and society. They came in search of a better life for themselves and their children, and they have helped to create a richer life for all of us,” the City of Grand Junction 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation read.
The celebration will showcase different aspects of the Hispanic culture with traditional food and drinks; there will also be music and performances. The Western Colorado Latino Chamber of Commerce will also present its annual Rich Lopez Award to Carlos Ruiz and Nicole Bernal-Ruiz for their tireless efforts for a better Western Slope.
