Nicaragua and Honduras – Rain From Hurricane Eta Causes Flooding – FloodList

Nicaragua

Nicaragua’s disaster agency, SINAPRED, said that around 30,000 people had been pre-emptively evacuated from threatened areas in RACCN.

Images shared on Social Media showed severe wind damage in parts of RACCN as well as flooding from high waves and storm surge along the region’s coast.

Flash flooding caused by heavy rainfall was also reported, in particular in the municipalities of Siuna, Rosita and Bonanza. Local media reported 2 fatalities in Bonanza. SINAPRED said full damage assessments cannot be carried out until the severe weather has passed.

Data from Nicaragua’s Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER) show parts of RACCN recorded more than 100 mm of rain in 24 hours to 04 November.

Honduras

In Honduras, the departments of Colon, Atlantida, Cotes, Yoro, and Gracias a Dios were under red alert as of 03 November.

The Institution of Civil Protection in Honduras, COPECO, said on 03 November that 1,574 people have been affected, with some rescues or evacuations after flooding in the departments of Colón, Yoro, Olancho and Atlántida, where military were called in to evacuated 8 families in flooded areas of La Ceiba. La Ceiba recorded 260.5 mm of rain in 24 hours to 03 November.

According to COPECO, heavy rainfall has caused several rivers to overflow, including the Satre in Sonaguera, Colón, and the Talgua in Catacamas in Olancho. Over 80 mm of rain fell in Catacamas in 24 hours to 04 November 2020.

Trinidad and Jamaica

Heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Eta caused some flooding on the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and also Trinidad and over the last 24 hours.

In Trinidad, one man missing after being swept away by flash floods in the village of Hardbargain, South Trinidad, on 03 November.

Meanwhile the government in Jamaica reported consistent rains over the last 24 hours “have left roads in St. Thomas impassable, while others in neighboring parishes of St. Mary and Portland have been reduced to single lane due to flooding and landslides.”

Elsewhere, heavy rainfall was also reported in parts of the Cayman Islands and Costa Rica.
