Nicaragua 4, Australia 0
Nicaragua pitcher Juan Mena struck out 16 batters – breaking a 33-year-old record – to lead the Latin America champions to a 4-0 win over Australia. The record 16th strikeout came in the bottom of the seventh inning on Mena’s 95th pitch of the game – the maximum in any game.
The previous record of 15 strikeouts was set in 1991 by David Orndorff of East Shippensburg, Pa. Nicaragua also set a new team record for strikeouts with 17 when Hanley Castro earned a strikeout after coming in relief of Mena. The pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout, walking three. Australia fell to 0-2 and fell out of contention in the International Pool with its second loss.
Florida 5, Hawaii 1
The USA Southeast champions from Tampa, Fla., advanced in the Junior League World Series with a 5-1 win over the West champs from Honolulu, Hawaii. The Keystone Little League team broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double by Cole Shearer and a two-run homer by Greyson Brandt. The win was the second for the Florida state champions (2-1). The last was the second for the Honolulu Little League in the modified double-elimination format.
Hawaii’s Peyton Shomokawa and Brennan Tomas each went 2-2 as their team outhit Florida, 12-9. Brandt and Noah Caraway had two hits apiece for Florida.

Mexico won for the first time in the 2024 Junior League World Series and kept hopes alive in the InternationalPool. Matamoros, Tamaulipas, defeated Europe-Africa regional champ Barcelona, Spain, 1-0. In a pitchers duel, Mexico’s David Zarate and Spain’s Alberto Morillo went the distance. Zararte allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven. Morillo pitched a four-hitter, fanning four. Mexico got the only run it needed in the first inning when Marcos Lara and Miguel Padilla singled and, after an out, Padilla would score on a field error. Spain did rally to load the bases twice in the fifth inning, but could score. Mexico advanced. Spain (0-2) – playing in the JLWS for the for the first time – was eliminated from contention.
Pennsylvania 8, Illinois 4
USA Central Region champion DuBois, Pa. never trailed in a game they needed to win with an 8-4 victory over the Central Region champs from Elmhurst/River Forest, Ill.. DuBois led 2-1 in the second inning, 4-1 in the third and 5-2 after four. Pennsylvania scored three more in the sixth to wrap up its first victory of the tournament. For Illinois, it was the second loss of the modified double-elimination event, which eliminated the Central champs from the competition. All was not bad for Illinois. Each team had nine hits. Illinois’ Carson Krischke went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Fran Madden went 2-for-3 and scored twice. For the East champs, Jackson McCall doubled and knocked in two runs. Seven other players hit safely.
Nicaragua 3, Mexico 0
Latin America champion Rivas, Nicaragua, used small ball and advanced to Friday’s games at the World Series with a 3-0 shutout of the Mexico champions from Matamoros, Tamaulipas. In its first-ever appearance in the JLWS, Nicaragua improved to 3-1 and earned another game in the tournament. Each team had only four hits. Nicaragua pitchers Leonardo Quiroz, Hanley Castro and Envel Gonzalez combined on the shutout, striking out seven. Alexander Mejia had two hits, half of his team’s total. Miguel Padilla and Ivan Cuesta pitched for Mexico, which ended its tournament run at 1-2.
Florida 6, Pennsylvania 4
USA Southeast champion Tampa, Fla., stayed alive in the Junior League Baseball World Series with a 6-4 victory over East champ DuBois, Pa. Trailing 4-1 after two innings, Florida scored four runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to win for the third time in four World Series games. Tampa outhit DuBois, 11-6, with Greyson Brandt, Chanse Goode, Gavin McCaffrey and Lee Melamut earning two hits apiece. Melamut had two doubles. Gavin McCaffrey and Kaleb Unarte split the pitching duties for the winners from the Keystone Little League. London Duncan went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the East champs, who finished their World Series run at 1-2.
