Today marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, and Shreve Memorial Library is joining the celebration. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the many accomplishments and contributions, as well as diverse cultures, of Hispanic Americans, honoring those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Hispanic Heritage Month is unique in that the month-long celebration spans two months, taking place between September 15 and October 15. Why is that? The time period covers the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, as well as the independence days of Mexico and Chile.
Shreve Memorial Library will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a wide variety of programs highlighting Hispanic culture now through October. These programs include explorations into Hispanic traditional and folk art, lively book discussions, movie screenings, food samplings, music, crafts and more. Library patrons of all ages are encouraged to visit any Shreve Memorial Library branch to take part in the celebration and learn more about Hispanic heritage. As always, all library programs are free and open to the public, and we have Hispanic Heritage Month programs available for all ages. A complete list of all Hispanic Heritage Month programs is available online at www.shreve-lib.org.
In addition to learning more about Hispanic culture, now is a great time to learn to speak Spanish. Shreve Memorial Library, through the State of Louisiana Library Databases, now has access to Mango Languages, one of the top language learning platforms out there. With Mango Languages, you can learn to speak Spanish, as well as over 70 other languages, fluently. The Conditions of Unconditional Love by Alexander McCall Smith (fiction)
Everyone’s favorite moral philosopher and amateur sleuth, Isabel Dalhousie, is back and once again finds herself facing a number of tricky situations and philosophical questions, both public and private. It seems as if Isabel’s life has fallen into a comfortable and tidy rhythm. Well, as tidy as things can be with two small boys wreaking havoc around the house. But when her husband, Jamie, invites a woman named Dawn – recently embroiled in a contentious affair with a member of Jamie’s orchestra – to stay with them, things begin to go awry. Strange noises can be heard from the upper floor, even when Dawn is supposedly at work, and the couple wonders whether something more nefarious may be afoot. If that weren’t enough, Professor Robert Lettuce Is staging an academic conference and has asked Isabel to publish the conference papers in a special issue of the Review of Applied Ethics. But something is definitely suspect about the funding, and it will be up to Isabel to sort it out. As the truth comes to light, Isabel must once more rely on her kindness, powers of deduction and philosophical expertise to navigate these sensitive matters.
What Have You Done? by Shari Lapena (fiction)
Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Fairhill, Vermont. But this morning that will change. And one innocent question could be deadly. What have you done? The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked. But Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer. How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia. Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers.
Bear: A Novel by Julia Phillips (fiction)
They were sisters and they would last past the end of time. Sam and Elena dream of another life. On the island off the coast of Washington where they were born and raised, they and their mother struggle to survive. Sam works on the ferry that delivers wealthy mainlanders to their vacation homes while Elena bartends at the local golf club, but even together they can’t earn enough to get by, stirring their frustration about the limits that shape their existence. Then one night on the boat, Sam spots a bear swimming the dark waters of the channel. Where is it going? What does it want? When the bear turns up by their home, Sam, terrified, is more convinced than ever that it’s time to leave the island. But Elena responds differently to the massive beast. Enchanted by its presence, she throws into doubt the desire to escape and puts their long-held dream in danger. A story about the bonds of sisterhood and the mysteries of the animals that live among us – and within us – Bear is a propulsive, mythical, richly imagined novel from one of the most acclaimed young writers in America.
