North American Vasa organizers have backup plan to address weather concerns

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — After years of weather conditions impacting the North American Vasa, organizers now have a backup plan for the cross-country skiing races.

In February 2025, thousands of cross-country skiers will head to Traverse City to race in the 49th-annual North American Vasa.

In 2024, the race at Timber Ridge Resort was cancelled due to lack of snow, and in 2023 the races had to be shortened and some events were cancelled.

But plans are now in place to move the event to a new location where snow can be made if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

“Last year the race was cancelled. The year before that it was shortened. We went through the COVID years,” said Ken Dawson.

“This year we wanted to have an event. So, we teamed, a partnership with the Traverse City Parks and Recreation at Hickory Hills here. They have snow making capabilities, they’ve already hosted the junior nationals cross-country ski event, and also the state finals. It’s a great backup plan,” Dawson said.

Registration is underway for the 49th-annual North American Vasa Festival of Races.

The Vasa will take place on February 8 and 9 at Timber Ridge Resort.
