Our Eagles reporter is in Brazil: What to know as we cover first NFL game in South America

The Philadelphia Eagles are opening the 2024 season Friday against the Green Bay Packers.

It’s a big game not only because it’s between two NFC powerhouses or because it’s the first game of the season for both teams.

It’s also a big game because it’s the first NFL game played in South America – São Paulo, Brazil to be exact.

Here’s what you need to know about the Eagles-Packers game in Brazil.

Martin Frank arrives in Sao Paulo

Wednesday afternoon: It’s hard to tell that there’s an American football game coming in two days, other than my plane filled with Eagles fans, not to mention some Packers fans. Yes, they travel too. In fact, the downtown hotel I’m staying in, there might even be more Packers fans.

Either way, Sao Paulo is a humongous city. And the traffic is horrendous. It took me 90 minutes to go 20 miles from the airport to the hotel. Imagine I-95 in Delaware in crawling traffic from the state line at the Naaman’s Road exit to the toll plaza at Newark on a beach weekend.

The only vehicles moving are the multitudes of motorcycles whizzing by in between clogged lanes of traffic. No wonder why there are so many motorcycles here.

Don’t look at your phones!

As for safety, we’re constantly told not to carry our phones in our hands because bandits will come out of nowhere and swipe them. And walking around the neighborhood I’m staying in, I have hardly noticed anyone looking at their phones as they’re walking.

The Eagles will be some 4,750 miles away Friday night, but Lincoln Financial Field will still be filled.

The Eagles home stadium is hosting a watch party for the Birds season-opening game against the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The game will be shown live on large LED screens on the field.

Here are a few other recommendations on where to catch the game locally.

The way the Eagles see it, the NFL’s first-ever game in South America might as well be in Minneapolis in December.

“We’re professionals,” Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said. “We’re down there to win a football game. We’re not down there to see the city, do all this other stuff. This is not a vacation. This is a football game.”

You’ve never seen this jersey combo before, the Philadelphia Eagles promise.

If Jalen Hurts and the Eagles were to venture into Sao Paulo, Brazil upon their arrival on Wednesday, they would see a mural of Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, pictured with Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love to commemorate the first-ever NFL game in South America.
