The Panama Canal Authority has announced that, from 1 January 2025, a dedicated monthly slot will be auctioned to Neopanamax vessels that meet the criteria set out in the Panama Canal Green Vessel Classification system.
The exclusive slot will become available for auction 30 days before the scheduled transit date and the pilot programme is intended to encourage the transit of vessels operating on alternative fuels or equipped with energy efficient technologies.
The standards that Neopanamax vessels will have to meet feature in the Advisory to Shipping No. A-12-2023, and the Panama Canal Authority said that further information about the pilot scheme will be revealed an upcoming advisory.
The Panama Canal Green Vessel Classification system, including a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Fee, was first mooted in 2021 by the Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales
The system is intended to build upon the Canal’s existing incentives for sustainable shipping lines, provided through its Green Connection Environmental Recognition Program. This program has evolved from the Green Connection Award, the Environmental Premium Ranking, and the Emissions Calculator.
Ships are classified in levels depending on their energy efficiency, and the classification system takes account of a vessel’s Energy Efficient Design Index (EEDI), operational measures such as the use of bow thrusters, and the use of zero carbon biofuels or carbon neutral fuels.
