Panama City-based Copa Airlines will soon expand its network in the United States with a new flight to San Diego, California. The carrier already flies to more than a dozen destinations in the US and expects the latest addition to drive tourism and business opportunities.
New flight to San Diego
Copa Airlines
has added one more US destination to its network. Starting June 25, it will fly to San Diego International Airport (SAN) in California from Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, Panama.
The carrier is no stranger to California as it already flies to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). San Diego will be its third destination in the state. Pedro Heilbron, CEO of Copa Airlines, commented,
“With the addition of San Diego, we enhance connectivity between Southern California and Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, fostering tourism and commercial exchange across the continent. This new connection will allow more travelers to comfortably and reliably access one of the most dynamic cities in the United States while integrating them into Latin America’s most extensive route network through the Hub of the Americas® in Panama.”
Flight schedule
The carrier will deploy its aircraft between Panama City and San Diego four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The flight from Panama City will depart at 13:16 local time and reach San Diego International Airport
at 18:15 local time. The return flight will operate on the same days, departing from San Diego at 20:58 and arriving in Panama City at 5:20.
Kimberly Becker, President and CEO, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said that “this route will boost opportunities for business and leisure travel to Central and South America like never before. We look forward to a successful partnership with Copa.”

Copa Airlines has an extensive network in the US and flies to more than 15 destinations in the country from its primary hub in Panama City. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, there are more than 900 flights from Panama City to the various destinations in the US in February.
Last year, the carrier added Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina to its list of US destinations, which also includes Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington.
With the addition of San Diego, Copa Airlines will offer direct connections to 86 destinations in 32 countries across North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean from Panama City. The airline says that the new route will provide passengers with a convenient and seamless connection to and from San Diego, facilitating easier and more efficient access to Southern California.
Most punctual in Latin America
A subsidiary of Copa Holdings, Copa Airlines has been in operation for 76 years. It operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet and has been consistently named the most punctual airline in Latin America.
The airline announced in January that Cirium recognized Copa Airlines as “The Most Punctual Airline in Latin America” in 2024, achieving a punctuality rate of 88.22% for on-time arrivals, the highest score in the Americas and third globally.
This was the tenth time that the airline managed to get this title. Pedro Heilbron, CEO of Copa Airlines, said,
“Being recognized for the tenth time as the most punctual airline in Latin America and achieving the best punctuality score across the Americas, demonstrates our firm commitment to connecting the Americas seamlessly. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication, teamwork, and tireless efforts of Copa Airlines’ more than 8,000 employees, who consistently strive to deliver world-class service to the passengers who trust us to get them to their destinations on time.”
This was also remarkable because, in 2024, Copa Airlines was one of several carriers affected by the temporary grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft following the Alaska Airlines midair blowout incident.
