The USMNT heads into Thursday night’s match following a 2-0 victory over Bolivia in their tournament opener last Saturday. Christian Pulisic scored just over two minutes in with a stunning long-range shot off a Tim Weah corner kick, marking his 30th international goal and tying him with Brian McBride for fifth on the USMNT’s all-time scoring list. Folarin Balogun doubled the lead before halftime with a goal assisted by Pulisic, securing a 2-0 win.
Panama began their Copa América campaign against Uruguay on Sunday at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Despite an early 1-0 deficit from a Maximiliano Araújo goal, Panama remained competitive until the closing minutes. Darwin Núñez and Matias Viña added two more goals for Uruguay in the 85th and 91st minutes, respectively. Michael Murillo scored a late goal for Panama, ending the match at 3-1 in favor of Uruguay.
Both the US and Uruguay have three points and a +2 goal differential, but Uruguay leads Group C with more goals scored. Panama and Bolivia have zero points, with Panama ahead due to goals scored.
The USA holds a 17W-2L-7D record against Panama. In 12 tournament matches, all in the Concacaf Gold Cup, the US has a 6W-1L-5D advantage. In their last meeting, Panama won a Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal on July 12, 2023, 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Before that, Panama and the USA split their 2022 World Cup qualifiers, with Panama winning 1-0 at home and the USA winning 5-1 in Orlando, led by Pulisic’s hattrick.
