PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – November is Alzheimer’s Awareness month. According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, there are 6.2 million Americans living with the disease.
FSU Panama City held it’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s event where hundreds of people walked to show their support.
Organization leaders say just in Bay County more than 3,200 people over 65 who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Those who are participating in the walk held colorful flowers that signify their connection to Alzheimer’s.
Yellow is if you are a caregiver of someone with Alzheimer’s. Orange is for advocacy. Blue is if you are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and purple is if you have lost someone with Alzheimer’s. One woman says she is walking for her mom.
“She worked in an assisted living facility and so for many years, she did the walk and she passed last year in June,” said Tami Holovach, Walk to End Alzheimer’s participant. “As a family we just want to continue walking for her.”
Another walk participant says he has first-hand experience with Alzheimer’s.
“My dad suffers with Alzheimer’s,” said Irvin Clarke, Associate Dean of Student and Strategic Initiatives at FSU Panama City. “I know first-hand the impact that it has on him, but also an impact that has on our family.”
