The pathway through to India and Sri Lanka 2026 resumes on Friday, with nine more hopeful nations set to face off in Argentina in a competitive ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub Regional Qualifier.
Men’s T20 World Cup cricket returns to the region after the scintillating action witnessed earlier in the year in the West Indies and the USA, and with both co-hosts having already secured their place at the 2026 edition, the field is open for another entertaining showcase of high-stakes competition.
Buenos Aires is the setting, and four venues in the city will see hosts Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Panama, and Suriname battle it out across 36 matches with a spot at next year’s Americas Qualifier firmly in their sights.
Starting with fixtures in St Georges and St Albans on opening day, the drama will build to the final round of matches on 16 December, where the top three teams on the standings will earn a spot alongside Canada at the next stage and the right to prolong their qualification journey.
All matches will be available to watch live on ICC.tv, while fans in India can follow the action on FanCode.
Looking ahead to the competition, Argentina captain Pedro Baron was optimistic about his side’s chances: “Our preparation for this event has been really good. We have been training a lot as a squad and with our local clubs.
“The team goal is to get the best results possible and to keep a tight and unified team. We play one match at a time and we are prepared to give 100 per cent in each game.
“Qualifying would mean the world to us. It would make our country proud and would boost the whole Argentina cricket community.”
Hernan Pereyra, President of the Argentine Cricket Association, added: “As the ICC Men’s T20 Americas Sub Regional Qualifiers 2024 kicks off, I extend my warmest welcome to all participants and supporters. Buenos Aires, a city alive with culture and spring energy, is the perfect setting for this incredible cricketing journey.
“To the players, may this tournament be a memorable chapter in your cricketing journey. This is a significant step on the road to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.”
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will feature 20 teams, with 12 automatic qualifiers and eight teams that qualify through regional pathway events.
The automatic qualifiers comprise Super 8 qualifying teams at the recently concluded 2024 edition: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, South Africa, West Indies and USA.
Sri Lanka also qualified automatically as hosts with Ireland, New Zealand and Pakistan completing the lineup by virtue of being the three highest-ranked teams on the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings table on 30 June 2024.
Sub Regional Qualifiers have been held across all ICC regions throughout 2024, with regional finals in 2025 set to determine the remaining teams that will feature at the blockbuster event.
