Sports Desk, July 2 (EFE).- Uruguay beat the United States 1-0 to eliminate the hosts from the group stage of the Copa America, while Panama qualified for the quarterfinals thanks to their 3-1 win over Bolivia on Monday.
The US had to win after their shock 1-2 defeat to Panama in the previous match but failed to create adequate chances to trouble Uruguay, one of the favorites, who advanced to the next round with a win in all three group matches.
Mathias Olivera took advantage of a rebound left by American goalkeeper Matthew Charles Turner to score Uruguay’s only goal in the 66th minute.
The US defeat at Kansas City, coupled with Panama’s win over Bolivia in Orlando in the other Group C match, ensured their elimination for the first time in a major tournament in which they won their first match.
It was a major setback for the US, the co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, who followed the exit door with co-hosts Mexico.
Panama were determined not to let their advantage go, and they dominated Bolivia to record a convincing win.
Jose Fajardo opened the scoring for Panama in the 22nd minute before Bolivia equalized through Bruno Miranda in the 69th minute, their first goal in the competition.

It took Panama only 10 minutes to retake the lead, thanks to Eduardo Guerrero.
Cesar Yanis sealed the victory for Panama with a goal in the 91st minute.
Brazilian Edina Alves created history in the match by becoming the first ever female referee in the continental tournament.
Uruguay and Panama now await the result of the Group D match between Brazil and Colombia to know their rivals in the quarterfinals.
Whoever finishes second in the group will face Uruguay in the quarterfinals in Las Vegas, while the champions in the group will face Panama in Glendale, with both matches scheduled for July 6. EFE
