Paraguay and Argentina became the 11th and 12th teams to qualify for the 2024 Olympic men’s soccer tournament.
They finished 1-2 in the Conmebol Preolimpico, the South American qualifying tournament, ahead of Brazil (the Olympic gold-medalist in 2016 and 2021) and Venezuela.
Both Paraguay and Argentina were led by MLS players: Diego Gomez (Inter Miami) and Thiago Almada (photo, Atlanta United), respectively. They shared the scoring lead in the Preolimpico with Uruguay’s Luciano Rodriguez with five goals apiece.
Also on Argentina are midfielder Federico Redondo, the son of Argentine great Fernando Redondo rumored to be headed to Inter Miami, and backup goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo, who will return to the USL champion Phoenix Rising on loan from Lanus.
