Asunción, Agencia IP.- The 54th Meeting of Ministers of Energy of Latin America and the Caribbean, the highest governing body of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), was inaugurated this Wednesday in Asunción.
During the opening, the host Minister of Public Works and Communications, Claudia Centurión, emphasized that Paraguay has the highest per capita generation of renewable electricity in the world and, thanks to its surplus, is one of the leading energy exporters.
Officials from Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications and the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) participated in the opening ceremony.
Minister Claudia Centurión expressed that the government of the Republic of Paraguay is very pleased to host the OLADE governance meetings and the ninth Energy Week. She expressed her hope that these days would be highly productive for addressing topics in favor of a sustainable and fair energy transition.
She affirmed that Paraguay has the world’s highest per capita generation of renewable electricity and, thanks to its surplus, is one of the leading energy exporters.
Promoting a more sustainable energy matrix
Centurión also highlighted Paraguay’s challenges in achieving equitable access to electricity and emphasized the country’s commitment to developing a sustainable energy matrix that aligns with economic, social, and environmental growth.
She further underscored the importance of energy integration in the region and OLADE’s key role in this process: «Our goals align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Rest assured, the Paraguayan government is determined to pursue an energy transition and diversify the electricity generation matrix to ensure medium- and long-term security. Paraguay reaffirms its commitment to OLADE and aims to play an active role in achieving the resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability goals of the energy sector in the region,» she asserted.
For his part, OLADE Executive Secretary Andrés Rebolledo expressed gratitude for the Paraguayan government’s hospitality and support for the event, appreciating the delegations’ participation as a show of commitment to regional energy development.
At that moment, he noted, «I just wanted to take a few minutes to extend this welcome, to sincerely thank the ministers, observers, and organizations joining us today. We see your presence as a demonstration of commitment to the energy development of our region,» he stated.
Argentina transfers Presidency to Barbados
During the event, Argentina transferred the presidency to Barbados, which now assumes the leadership of the 54th Meeting of Ministers.
Key topics for energy development
Key topics to be addressed during the meeting include the geopolitics of energy resources, regional economic stability, and OLADE’s role in the energy progress of Latin America and the Caribbean. Also, advancements in the energy transition and promoting sustainable development through inclusive policies and strengthening regional agreements.
This international meeting, which will run until Thursday, October 31, brings together 20 ministerial delegations to discuss critical energy development and regional integration topics.
The 54th Meeting of Ministers of Energy, held in Paraguay as part of the IX Energy Week, reaffirms its importance as a forum for strategic decision-making in the energy sector.
