Asunción, Agencia IP.- President Santiago Peña stated that a second Donald Trump presidency in the United States «could be one of the most radical changes in modern history for the region,» given its focus on Latin America, which he described as a «great ally of the United States.»

Historically, Republican administrations have fostered closer ties with the region. This time, the presidency commencing on January 20 includes officials with substantial knowledge of Latin America’s potential, Peña remarked in an interview with Infobae from Washington, where he attends Trump’s inauguration.

This comment references Marco Rubio’s nomination as Secretary of State and Christian Landau’s nomination as Deputy Secretary of State. Peña noted that he has met with Rubio, the former senator from Florida, on five occasions—starting when Peña was a presidential candidate, then as president-elect, during Rubio’s visit to Paraguay in February 2024, and again during Peña’s tour in May.

Last Friday, Peña held another meeting with Rubio, now the incoming Secretary of State, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and scheduling an official visit to Paraguay.

U.S. foreign policy

In his Washington interview, Peña expressed that Trump’s second term would adopt strong positions to address international conflicts. He highlighted the recent truce in Gaza between Hamas and Israel—a cooperative effort by outgoing President Joe Biden and President-elect Trump—as an example of swift decision-making by the incoming administration.

«I do not doubt that he (Donald Trump) will play a key role in resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. And I am very confident that he will also resolve the issue in Venezuela,» Peña declared.

Peña also addressed Trump’s stance on imported goods from China and the announced increase in tariffs. «Unfortunately, China doesn’t play by the same rules. We have laws that protect employers and the environment while competing with a country that doesn’t uphold the same standards,» he noted.

In this context, Peña stated, «Paraguay is committed to becoming a member of the OECD, meeting the highest labor and environmental protection standards. I believe this positions us as strategic allies.»
