Lima (Agenzia Fides) – The solidarity campaign “Help us to help” has been launched to assist families affected by the oil spill that occurred at the La Pampilla refinery, in the district of Ventanilla (Callao), on January 15 (see Fides, 22/1/2022).
Cardinal Pedro Barreto, S.J., Archbishop of Huancayo and First Vice President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, participated in the launch of the campaign, which is promoted by the pastoral initiative Resucita Perú Ahora, Cáritas Perú, América Televisión and Canal N. The environmental catastrophe has been described by the Peruvian government as “the worst ecological disaster” that has occurred in Lima in recent years and has affected approximately 100 kilometers of coastline, as reported by the Ministry of the Environment on January 28. This disaster has caused the death of local marine and bird species and has also affected hundreds of fishermen, merchants and citizens along the river, who have been forced to stop their economic activities due to contamination. Many of these families survive thanks to community canteens. Faced with this serious situation, the “Help us to help” campaign invites all companies, institutions and people of good will to join this solidarity initiative, to bring food to the affected families. Within the framework of this campaign, 14,000 vulnerable families and 217 community canteens affected by the oil spill have already received 20,000 live chickens, thanks to the donation from the Santa Elena Group.
