Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is scheduled to attend the summits of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in Peru and the G20 in Brazil from Thursday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa told reporters on Tuesday that Ishiba will visit the two South American nations for eight days.
At the APEC summit in Peru, Ishiba is planning to convey Japan’s position on issues such as promoting free and open trade and investment.
At the G20 summit in Brazil, he wants to emphasize that Japan will tackle poverty, climate change and other matters together with developing countries.
On the sidelines of the summits in South America, Ishiba hopes to meet separately with world leaders including US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Referring to possible talks with Xi, Hayashi said Japan and China have considerable potential but various outstanding issues as well, and so it is important to have high-level dialogue and communication. He added that adjustments are ongoing to realize such talks.
