LIMA, Peru — History is in the making for The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square as they arrive in the South American country to continue a world tour.
This is the first time the choir has been to Peru, home to more than 630,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Dozens of Peruvians were at the Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru, eagerly wanting to get their picture with choir members.
“Very, very happy, and happy and excited, super excited!” said Brigitte Contreras from Peru in broken English. “Very, very happy for my family and my people of Peru.”
“To have, like, a live performance for us is … a great blessing for the whole country,” added Leonardo Lara, from Peru. “They bring peace to all of us and that peace we can show to the world.”

Lima is one of the largest cities in South America, with more than 10 million people. The country sits on the central West Coast of South America. It’s known for one of the Seven Wonders of the World — Machu Picchu.
The choir started its “Songs of Hope” world tour in Mexico City in June of 2023, then the Philippines in February of 2024, and the southeastern part of the U.S. in September of 2024. Lima is the fourth stop for the Tabernacle Choir.

“We are so excited to be here in Peru,” said choir member Missy Omer. “It’s amazing to feel the love of the people all the way to Peru. It just gives us this connection and it’s wonderful. What a warm reception.”
“It’s going to bless us, we hope we can bless them,” added choir member Clark Hirschi. “I think they are feeling what we have been feeling in getting ready to come, and we have all this emotion and eager to give, and they have all this emotion and eager to receive.”
The second concert in Lima will be held on Saturday at the National Stadium, where more than 30,000 people are expected to attend. It will be the largest venue the choir has performed in.
But concerts are not the only thing on the choir’s agenda. Former U.S. Senator Mitt Romney is joining church Apostle Elder Ulisses Soares to visit with the country’s top political and religious leaders and dignitaries.

On Wednesday afternoon, Elder Soares, Romney, and the choir presidency went to the House of Congress in Lima to receive a congressional award from the president of Congress, Eduardo Salhuana.
“Today, the Congress has the honor to open the doors to the church and the legendary Tabernacle Choir singing their messages of hope,” Salhuana said.
