Xi Jinping in Peru to Unveil China-Funded Megaport in Chancay Amid Protests | Firstpost America
Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting the Latin American nation of Peru where he will be unveiling a Chinese-funded megaport in Chancay City, a few hundred kilometres north of the capital Lima. China spent nearly $3 billion on the port and the Chinese company, COSCO Shipping, will control over 60% of the port. Xi Jinping will also meet Peruvian President Dina Boluarte as Beijing reviews its copper mine investments and energy generation projects in Peru. However, protests have erupted in Lima ahead of Xi Jinping’s arrival as many say that only the two governments are benefiting from the port. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden will meet Xi Jinping in Peru on Saturday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
