Situated on Puerto Rico’s northwest coast in Aguadilla, Playa Peña Blanca is a charming and small beach renowned for its clear waters and rocky formations

LYMA RODRIGUEZ, Discover Puerto Rico

As fall’s chill begins to descend on North America, many travelers start to plan their winter Beach escapes. This year, be sure to put Puerto Rico on your list. Few visitors realize that the country (which boasts a coastline 270 miles long) lays claim to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including La Playuela and the famous Flamenco Beach. For travelers who are looking for less touristed hidden gems along the coast, Puerto Rico offers a variety of picturesque, lesser-known beaches just waiting to be explored.

Playa El Combate, Cabo Rojo

Part of the Boquerón National State Forest in Cabo Rojo, this beach on the lovely west coast of Puerto Rico is a popular place for locals yet remains largely unknown by tourists. The clear waters and large coral reefs make the beach a favorite for those who enjoy diving and snorkelling. Playa El Combate is also a perfect spot to take in amazing sunsets.

Playa La Jungla, Guánica

Situated in the dry forest region of Guánica, Playa La Jungla is a hidden gem for beachgoers. Enveloped by thick mangroves and a rugged terrain, this beach provides a peaceful retreat with its calm, welcoming waters that are great for snorkeling and swimming. The unique setting, with its lush mangroves and secluded shoreline, is a beacon for nature enthusiasts looking to explore the lovely landscapes of Puerto Rico’s southern coast.

Cayo Icacos has lots of coral reefs that provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling and exploring an active marine ecosystem, filled with sea turtles and starfish.

Cayo Icacos, Fajardo

Cayo Icacos, just off the coast of Fajardo on Puerto Rico’s east coast, is an uninhabited island accessible only by boat. Its crystal-clear waters gently lap against a stretch of pristine, white sand, making the journey worthwhile for any traveler. As the largest and most picturesque cay in La Cordillera Nature Reserve, Cayo Icacos has lots of coral reefs that provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling and exploring an active marine ecosystem, filled with sea turtles and starfish.

Playa Peña Blanca, Aguadilla

Situated on Puerto Rico’s northwest coast in Aguadilla, Playa Peña Blanca is a charming and small beach renowned for its clear waters and rocky formations. While it is frequented by locals, it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, so you won’t have to fight the crowds for that perfect spot. The excellent underwater visibility and vibrant marine life make it great for snorkeling. The dramatic cliffs that hug the beach add to its secluded and untouched allure.

Playa Pastillo, Isabela

Tucked away on the northern coast of Puerto Rico in Isabela, Playa Pastillo is a remote beach that offers a quiet and picturesque escape. This beach is known for its striking rocky formations, clear turquoise waters, and golden sands. It’s ideal for those who appreciate rugged natural beauty and a more solitary beach experience. While the strong currents make it less suitable for swimming, Playa Pastillo is perfect for beachcombing, photography, and soaking in the stunning coastal views.

Hugged by striking yellow cliffs, the under-the-radar Playa Negra is an inviting and unique black sand beach — among only 20 on the planet.

Playa Negra, Vieques

Hugged by striking yellow cliffs, the under-the-radar Playa Negra is an inviting and unique black sand beach — among only 20 on the planet. On the south coast of lovely Vieques Island, Playa Negra has a dramatic landscape very different from the white-sand beaches that are peppered throughout Puerto Rico. At this beach, the cerulean sea brushes against black sands that come from ancient volcanic rocks on the island. Only a quick drive or a long but breathtaking hike from the town of La Esperanza, this two-mile beach features rough waters and rip currents, and is therefore unsuitable for swimming but is ideal for sunbathing.

Pelicano Beach, Ponce

With pristine sands and amazingly clear waters, Pelícano Beach at Caja de Muertos Island in Ponce is a top spot for a beach day in Puerto Rico. The small, picturesque beach’s calm waters offer ideal swimming conditions. The beach is also famed for its exceptional cleanliness and environmental sensitivity. It made history as the first beach in the Caribbean to receive the esteemed Blue Flag Award.
