Ashley Ann Cariño Barreto, 28, of Fajardo, Puerto Rico was one of the Miss Universe 2022 candidates who stood out in the competition. She finished in the Top 5.
Including Cariño, a total of 84 women competed for the Miss Universe 2022 crown, which was crafted by Mouawad. The judges were Big Freedia, Mara Martin, Emily Austin, Olivia Quido, Myrka Dellanos, Sweta Patel, Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam and Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete.
Hosted by Jeannie Mai and Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo, the Miss Universe 2022 coronation night was held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States on January 14, 2023. Zuri Hall and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray were the live commentators.
“If you’re crowned Miss Universe, how would you represent all this year’s delegates through your reign?” Cariño was asked during the semifinal question-and-answer portion. She answered, “I would represent all of this year’s delegates because I am a mirror of what a woman is.”
“I believe in the dream and the power that we all hold to make our dreams a reality,” Cariño continued. “That is why I am standing here today. I know what it’s like to not believe in your dream but I also know what it’s like to find a voice.”
“We are the voice of tomorrow so let your voice echo in the chamber of time because this is the power we have,” the Puerto Rican beauty queen added. “I will represent the women like that.”
Representing the U.S., R’Bonney Gabriel, 28, was crowned Miss Universe 2022. Runner-up to Gabriel was Amanda Dudamel, 23, of Venezuela while Andreina Martínez, 25, of the Dominican Republic was second runner-up.
