International cottage in Balboa Park highlights Puerto Rican heritage

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Puerto Ricans make up the second largest Hispanic group in San Diego, and in America’s Finest City, the House of Puerto Rico has been supporting cultural and educational programs for more than 50 years.

The House of Puerto Rico became a mini museum that opened in 2006 and highlights the Puerto Rican heritage today. It’s part of a group of international cottages designed to represent countries around the world in Balboa Park.

The cottage is a place that makes you feel like you’re visiting the small island located between the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans.

Carmen Acevedo de Belasco is a volunteer. As soon as you walk in the door, she makes you feel at home. As you walk through the mini museum, you will notice the mixed heritage that makes up the Puerto Rican culture.

“The Taino Indians were the natives, then there were the Spaniards who brought with them the Africans. It’s a very beautiful combination. It’s very influential in our music and our art.”

Something that makes the Puerto Rican population unique from other Hispanic groups is that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens because the island is a commonwealth of the United States.

“We are proud of protecting the culture. It’s about your family, your protection, that, and  everything else as well. We like to celebrate everything, you know.”

A big part of the culture is enjoying the very popular game of dominoes.

“It’s very casual, very fun, a very fun gathering because it just brings everyone [together]. We don’t even have to know anyone to just share and enjoy.”

The House of Puerto Rico, which is also a nonprofit, offers a lot of assistance to the community and beyond.

“For example, for students we have scholarships. In 2017, when Hurricane Maria hit [the island], people came to us and they asked how could they help Puerto Rico. I think my culture can be described like a tear, even in the sad moments, a tear can just tickle you.”
