Rindge and Peterborough will be honoring veterans Saturday as part of the Wreaths Across America national movement to remember those who served with wreaths laid at their graves.
Wreaths Across America is a movement that stemmed from a tradition started at Arlington National Cemetery. Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine, donates the wreaths, which are decorated with red, hand-tied bows and laid at the graves of soldiers in the cemetery, including a special ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The tradition has since grown and formed into a nonprofit organization, Wreaths Across America, which now has wreath-laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico and overseas cemeteries on an annual basis.
In 2022, more than 2.7 million wreaths were laid at veterans’ graves, in 3,702 participating locations. Among them was Rindge’s Hillside Cemetery, and Hillside will be among the participating locations again this year.
On Saturday, volunteers are welcome to attend the Rindge ceremony, take a wreath and lay it at the grave of an identified veteran. The ceremony will be held at noon at the Hillside Cemetery on Goddard Road. According to the Hillside Cemetery Wreaths Across America sponsorship page, the cemetery has 360 known veteran graves.
The Peterborough ceremony will be held at 1 Grove St., with wreath placements immediately following the ceremony. Peterborough has a total of 620 veteran graves.
