The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island in North America and an unincorporated territory of the United States. The archipelago is located between the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
When the Treaty of Paris came into effect on April 11, 1899, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. Since 1917, residents of Puerto Rico have been citizens of the U.S., as well, but they do not vote for the president or vice president of the country.
