The Great American Beer Festival is not only an annual festival showcasing beers from across the nation. Hosted by the Brewers Association, the trade association representing America’s small and independent breweries, the Great American Beer Festival is also a judged beer competition. Winners of the 2024 edition of the competition were announced at a celebration on October 12 at the Denver Convention Center, which is home to the festival every year.
This year, approximately 9,200 beers and ciders were judged. Beers were entered from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
According to Chris Williams, competition director for the Brewers Association, the Great American Beer Festival competition offers a snapshot of craft beer in America. The number of entries was in line with the number of entries last year, but is down from a peak of over 10,000 entries in 2022, reflecting the stagnating growth of the overall craft beer industry. And while the top three entered categories were, as usual, IPA categories, almost every other top-ten category was a lager category, evidencing the growth in popularity of craft lager. The only other ale category in the top ten was Fruited American Sour.
“It takes about 5,000 volunteer man hours to receive, unpack, sort and organize the beers,” said Williams in a telephone interview. “It is quite the amazing feat!” Williams notes that breweries must send multiple cans or bottles of each beer entered in the competition, so they can be judged through multiple rounds, by the 285 top judges from across America. That means almost 60,000 cans and bottles of beers need to be handled.
