Daddy Yankee on Aug. 25, 2016 in Miami, Florida.

Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” is often the reggaeton song some people first remember hearing, particularly outside of Latin America.

Now, Daddy Yankee, who is a pioneer in the genre, is an executive producer on the Peacock docuseries “Reggaeton: The Sound That Conquered the World.” In it, the Puerto Rican artist takes viewers through his experience being a part of the initial voices of reggaeton and how it evolved alongside many other stars like Bad Bunny, Karol G and J Balvin.

The genre became popular in Puerto Rico in the late ‘80s — even before it was considered reggaeton. Earlier, the genre was called “underground,” referencing its more intimately intense emergence in the barrios and other impoverished areas of the Archipiélago, according to the docuseries.

With Latin artists leading the charts, breaking records and making history, reggaeton has become a global phenomenon. Bad Bunny has consistently been among Spotify’s most-streamed artists, claiming the first spot on the list in 2020, 2021 and 2022, while Karol G became Billboard’s 2024 Woman of the Year.

Reggaeton has even taken over the TODAY Plaza with J Balvin in 2021, Karol G in 2023 and Rauw Alejandro in 2024. Karol G made history on TODAY with the largest crowd ever gathered for one of our concerts.

To continue immersing yourself in the reggaeton culture, here’s what you need to know about “Reggaeton: The Sound That Conquered the World.”
