Former top national swimmer Randall Attin and veteran triathlete Jacqueline Jodhan withstood challenging conditions to complete the Eighth Annual Bente Weber Memorial 4.2km Cross-channel Swim from Nevis to St Kitts on March 28. The smooth-stroking Attin finished third among the men (1:09.21/fifth overall) while the plucky Jodhan was the seventh place women finisher (1:18.44/16th overall).
The top three places went to Americans as Rhian Purdy, who set a new record in 1:05.21, Roger Brown (1:05.38) and Marlise Davidson (1:06:07) claimed first, second and third place respectively. The open water crossing between Oualie Beach and Cockleshell Beach presented the swimmers with windy conditions, choppy seas, tricky currents and the need for skilful navigation to maintain a direct course to “the Mainland.”
This year’s version of the event attracted a record 98 participants (57 women and 41 men). At the after-race prize-giving ceremony, competitors commended the organisers for their staging of the event and their hospitality. The race organisers, in turn, expressed the hope that the event will continue to attract more and more regional swimmers and grow from strength to strength.
