The U.S. Virgin Islands’ under-17 boys national soccer team closed out play in the CONCACAF Under-17 Qualifiers on Saturday with a 9-2 loss to St. Kitts and Nevis in at the National Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Connor Bass, who plays in Queen City Mutiny FC’s MLS Next program in North Carolina, scored both goals for the Dashing Eagles, which finished the tournament with an 0-0-3 record in Group F.
Akanye Samuel-Francis led St. Kitts and Nevis (1-0-2, three points) to its only win of the Qualifiers with four goals. Savi-K Morton added three goals, all coming in the first half, and teammate Franklyn Mitcham scored twice for the Sugar Boyz.
The United States, ranked second among CONCACAF’s U-17 teams, won the group stage with a 3-0-0 record (nine points) after beating Cuba (2-0-1, six points) in the final Group F match 2-0 on Saturday night.
That sends the U.S.A., along with the other seven group winners, on to the 20254 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, scheduled for Nov. 5-27 in Qatar.
Mitcham put St. Kitts and Nevis in command early, scoring twice in a four-minute span in the first 10 minutes. His first goal came in the fifth minute, with the second in the eighth minute.
Bass put in his first goal for the USVI in the 21st minute to cut the margin to 2-1, only for Samuel-Francis to score in the 23rd minute for SKN.
That kicked off a four-goal run for St. Kitts and Nevis, pushing its lead to 6-1 at the halftime break behind three straight goals by Morton – in the 32nd, 40th and 45th minutes.
The sides didn’t score again until late in the second half, with Samuel-Francis scoring in the 83rd and 88th minutes, as well as two minutes into stoppage time.
Bass put in his second goal for the Dashing Eagles in the 87th minute, giving him three scores for the tournament.
