The U.S. Virgin Islands’ senior women’s national soccer team broke through with its first win in the Women’s Leeward Islands Challenge Series tournament Wednesday night, shutting out St. Kitts and Nevis 2-0 on Anguilla.
Mylee Bendinelli scored both goals, and goalkeeper Jenna Rehm got the clean sheet for the Lady Eagles (1-1) at the Anguilla Football Association Stadium.
The 16-year-old Bendinelli, a junior at Point Loma High School in San Diego, Calif., put the USVI in the lead with her goal in the 22nd minute. She added an insurance goal on St. Kitts and Nevis (0-2) in the 63rd minute.
The USVI Women’s National Team wraps up round robin play in the Women’s Leeward Islands Challenge Series today when they play Antigua and Barbuda (1-1). Match time is 6:30 p.m. Atlantic at the AFA Stadium.
A win by the Lady Eagles would put them in the Challenge Series’ championship game Saturday night, likely against host team Anguilla (2-0), which closes round robin play against St. Kitts and Nevis on Thursday night.
In addition to Bendinelli and Rehm, making up the USVI Women’s National Team squad are Jade Browne, Jayda Browne, Brianna Brudy, Solvana Calpano-Butler, Josie Couch, Jordan Crawford, Taylor Crawford, Magen Freeman, Lita Frost, Kelsey Hill, Johanna James, Kirsten Jones, Leah Lopez, Lily McMenamin, Kyliz Osorio, Ella Popple, Ariel Stolz and Naya Vialva.
The USVI’s coaching staff is led by head coach Stephan De Four, with assistant coach Peter Pierre, goalkeeper coach David Blaise, fitness coach Kirk Goldson, equipment manager Hilary Henriquez, physiotherapist Kern Meloney and team manager Anna Scott.
