Aaron Jones may have paid the price for opting to play for club over country. The former USA vice captain has been overlooked for the World Cup League 2 (WCL-2) tri-series starting on Friday. The selection panel decided to name an unchanged squad that last toured Namibia for WCL-2 in September. Jones chose to miss the Namibia tour with USA after opting to honour his CPL contract with St. Lucia Kings. It is understood that may have ruffled some feathers within the selection committee and the powers that be at USA Cricket after heading to the CPL despite ‘warnings’ from the cricket board. Jones, ultimately played as a local player in the competition and did not require an ‘NOC’ from USA Cricket.

By contrast Andries Gous, who cut short his engagement with Trinbago Knight Riders to make a last minute dash to Namibia retains his place in the side. The fact that USA stayed unbeaten in their 4 ODI games in Namibia in Jones’ absence may have fortified the selectors to take the bold call to axe Jones. He was recalled for the T20I series in light of his heroics in the CPL final but is also increasingly likely that Jones may lose his spot from the T20I team after a string of low scores in the Nepal T20I series last week. Jones has been omnipresent with the USA white ball squads since his arrival on the scene in 2018.

It was also a day of ecstasy and agony for young sensation Sanjay Krishnamurthy. The 21 year old, who has been the flavour of the American cricket summer with his exploits in the Major and Minor League rampaged his way to a tantalising knock of 167* turning up for USA-A against the touring Scotland. In an exhibition of his supreme fitness and temperament, Krishnamurthy braved the Dallas heat to scale the tall ask of 341 against a quality attack to stake his comeback into the national team.

Quite surprisingly, the board announced the team around the time USA-A embarked on their chase. While it may have been wiser to pick the team after the end of the game for which the selections game were held in the first place, it would bode well for the young Krishnamurthy to be added as the 16th man on the squad. USA are set to play their first game of the triseries on Friday against Nepal.

USA Squad: Monank Patel (captain), Smit Patel, Sai Teja Mukkamalla, Milind Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Andries Gous, Harmeet Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Juanoy Drysdale, Utkarsh Srivastava, Jasdeep Singh, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Yasir Mohammad, Sushant Modani
