The construction of a new green hospital, designed to be both sustainable and disaster-resilient, has started in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The facility’s ground-breaking ceremony took place in Arnos Vale on 26 October.

Located just 2.2 miles (3.5km) east of Kingstown, the new Arnos Vale Acute Referral hospital will span 189,000ft².

It is set to replace the ageing Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, which has become unfit for purpose due to structural challenges and limitations such as persistent leaks, limited space, and a suboptimal location.

The new hospital aims to address these challenges with a design that incorporates smart, green technology to manage waste and mitigate climate-related risks.

This approach is intended to ensure the safety and resilience of the hospital against natural hazards, making it one of the Caribbean’s first healthcare facilities with climate change impacts in mind.

The hospital has been designed to facilitate future expansion if required.

Upon completion of the project, the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital will turn into a maternal child and health centre.

The construction contract has been awarded to the Taiwanese Overseas Engineering and Construction Company, with the project expected to be completed within 32 months.

Health minister Jimmy Prince said: “I’ve spoken to all the officials in the Ministry of Health as to what we are going to do as a result of the expansion of our health services and how is this facility going to improve the services which we have.

“This new facility will not only expand our health services but also introduce a new governance system aimed at improving leadership, workforce recruitment, and a data-driven approach to healthcare.”

Minister Prince highlighted the expanded range of services the hospital will provide, including cardiovascular, neurological, endocrinology, orthopaedic rheumatology, haematology, oncology, dental, and gynaecology services.

The Arnos Vale hospital project is financed by a $125m loan from Taiwan and is expected to enhance the healthcare system nationwide.

The project reflects Taiwan’s broader engagement with the Latin American and Caribbean regions.

It reinforces the longstanding partnership between Taiwan and St Vincent and the Grenadines, emphasising both countries’ commitment to development and well-being.

“Construction on green hospital starts in St Vincent and the Grenadines” was originally created and published by Hospital Management, a GlobalData owned brand.
