Permanent representatives from nine of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, through a joint letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, have urged for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN, Central News Agency (CNA) reported. Signatories include representatives from Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu.
The letter calls on the UN to counter what it describes as ‘malicious distortions’ of UN Resolution 2758, which the allies claim endangers stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region. China asserts that the resolution confirms its ‘one China’ principle, while Taiwan argues it only addressed China’s UN representation without defining Taiwan’s status.
Advocating for neutrality, the representatives urged the UN to stop misinterpretations that prevent Taiwanese and the media from participating in UN activities. Delivered ahead of the UN’s Summit for the Future and the 79th General Assembly, the letter was accompanied by statements emphasizing Taiwan’s technological and democratic significance.
