THE Trinidad and Tobago Red Angels U-20s will take on the St Vincent and the Grenadines U-20 women this evening, a battle between the top two teams, at the First Citizens Bank Four-Nation “Jewels of the Caribbean” Women’s U-20 football tournament.
Both unbeaten, the Red Angels and SVG clash at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 5p.m. Then tomorrow the Red Angels meet the hitherto unbeaten Jamaicans at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, from 4p.m.
T&T Red Angels currently lead the competition with six points from two matches played, while the “Lady Heat” has five points from three matches.
Yesterday, the Red Angels picked up their second win of the tournament when they edged the T&T White Angels 1-0 in an evenly-matched encounter at the Larry Gomes Stadium. Scoring midfielder Oriella Martin provided the pass and Jada Herbert put a right-footer deep into the corner and past the dive of USA-based goalie Mya Figgerner for the only goal of the match, in the second half.
Preparing for upcoming CONCACAF Under-20 qualifiers in February, hosts T&T are fielding two teams in the tournament. The Red Angels are coached by outstanding former national defender Ayanna Russell, and the White Angels by Dernelle Mascall, another outstanding former ex-national player.
The Red Angels got off to a 5-0 win over Dominica, with Martin netting a beaver-trick and Ty’kaiya Dennis getting the other item.
The White Angels had managed a goalless draw with SVG, before playing their second match against the Red Angels yesterday,
