Exclusive video shows Hurricane Beryl slam Texas
Exclusive video captured in Sugar Land, TX, showed Hurricane Beryl making landfall as a Category 1 storm.
Hurricane Beryl has made landfall in Texas and could reach Oklahoma by Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Beryl left the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston, causing a storm surge and hurricane-force winds on Monday. The storm is predicted to move northeast over the next few days toward Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The National Weather Service in Norman said that Beryl could bring severe storms through southeastern Oklahoma. The storm is expected to have weakened considerably at that point, but is still expected to drop 4 to 6 inches of rain as it passes through.
Beryl was first identified on June 28 and made landfall in the Caribbean as a Category 4 hurricane.
It battered the Windward Islands along the eastern Caribbean, causing widespread destruction in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada, destroying or severely damaging more than 90% of the homes and buildings on at least three islands. After plowing through the islands, Beryl again re-strengthened, becoming a Category 5 storm, then reaching winds of 165 mph on the morning of July 2.
Has a hurricane or tropical storm reached Oklahoma before?
It’s rare for large, organized storms like a hurricane to reach this far inward, but it’s not impossible.
During the 2007 hurricane season, Tropical Storm Erin formed in the Gulf of Mexico and powered its way into west Texas. It eventually turned northeast toward Oklahoma and strengthened again as it crossed the state.
As Erin produced winds up to 60 miles an hour and its eyewall attempted to reform over Oklahoma, forecasters described the conditions as amounting to an “inland tropical storm.”
Erin caused six fatalities in Oklahoma mostly due to drowning and auto accidents.
