(MENAFN) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that Hurricane Beryl has severely impacted over 1 million people across the Caribbean. As of Friday, approximately 40,000 individuals in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, more than 110,000 in Grenada, and a staggering 920,000 in Jamaica have been affected by the hurricane, according to current estimates.
Hurricane Beryl, classified as a category 4 storm, has resulted in at least 11 fatalities and caused widespread devastation in Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, followed by significant impacts in Jamaica on Wednesday. Currently, the hurricane is affecting Belize and Mexico.
The International Organization for Migration reported extreme damage in Grenada, particularly on the islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique, where 70 percent and 97 percent of buildings were damaged, respectively. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, 90 percent of homes on Union Island were affected, and nearly all buildings on Canouan sustained damage.
In response to the crisis, OCHA has deployed teams to Caribbean nations to assist in their humanitarian efforts. Additionally, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated four million U.S. dollars to initiate emergency operations in Grenada, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Efforts are ongoing in collaboration with local authorities and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Agency to provide necessary support and aid to affected populations.
