GRENADA – The small island of Carriacou, north of Grenada, has been struck by the eye of Hurricane Beryl. The hurricane passed just south of the town of Hillsborough over the small island, which is part of the Grenadines but administratively belongs to Grenada. Communication is currently impossible, and damage or potential personal injury is unknown.
An hour ago, the path was about ten kilometers further south, and it appeared that two uninhabited islands just north of Grenada were to be directly hit.
The National Hurricane Center expects heavy rainfall and local flooding on the islands between Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where residents are advised to seek shelter.
Beryl is expected to remain a powerful hurricane as it moves across the Caribbean Sea this week. A hurricane warning has been issued for Jamaica. Stakeholders in the Cayman Islands, Belize, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the rest of the northwestern Caribbean should monitor its progress.
