The Caribbean island recorded a significant increase in cases of influenza A-H1NI with 32 confirmed cases since December 2023, according to official figures issued by the surveillance committee.
The acting director of the health portfolio, Roger Duncan, told the national press that influenza vaccines are not routinely administered in the country due to limited quantities; but it is imminent for people who are at greater risk of contracting this serious disease.
According to the specialist, adults over 65 years of age who suffer from various chronic ailments such as chronic kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, asthmatics and pregnant women should protect themselves in a similar way to what was done during the pandemic.
He also referred to health measures related to hand washing, maintaining distance and the use of a mask that complements vaccination.
Other nations in the region such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Saint Kitts and Nevis also continue to be alert to the increase of infectious diseases and viruses, which is why measures have not been ruled out to prevent any of them from generating a health crisis in their territories.
