Sara is expected to weaken over the Yucatan Peninsula

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

Sara, the 18th named storm of this hurricane season, was upgraded from a tropical depression this past Thursday. It’s now bringing big impacts to parts of Central America… including flooding rain that’s leading to mudslides. Due to a lack of steering flow, Sara is not moving very fast at all. This is not helping the matter in regards to Central America’s impacts. It will gradually move over the Yucatan Peninsula this weekend, which should help tear up its structure tremendously. So, the official forecast has it becoming a remnant low before moving into the Gulf of Mexico around Monday.

From that point, most forecast models don’t reorganize this system in the Gulf. However, we will still monitor it closely due to warm waters in the Bay of Campeche. Yet, another hinderance for its development will be the stronger wind shear over the Gulf. Plus, there’s an abundance of dry air. With all of those influences affiliated with the Gulf, it does seem rational that Sara (or its remnants) won’t thrive.

Regardless, much of its tropical moisture will be steered to towards parts of the Northern or Eastern Gulf Coast ahead of a cold front early next week. So, some Gulf Coast areas will get lots of rain. Stay tuned to our First Alert Weather Team for updates. https://www.wtok.com/weather/hurricane/

The rest of the tropics are quiet, and the season ends on November 30th.
