DETROIT, MI – A few vehicles have taken home some prestigious awards as the Detroit Auto Show has kicked off its first day.
The 2025 winners for the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards were announced Friday morning, Jan. 10 at an Automotive Press Association event on the auto show’s media day. The winners were the Honda Civic Hybrid, Ford Ranger and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz.
The auto show will open to the general public on Jan. 11 at Huntington Place and will run through Monday, Jan. 20.

These annual awards are given out by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. Every year the jury of 50 print, online and broadcast journalists use their experience to select the winners, which were sealed away in envelopes and not opened until the day of the event.
The jurors have dedicated hundreds of hours to test driving, researching and evaluating the vehicles based on criteria like automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, user experience and value, according to a media release.
The other finalists for this 2025 awards included Kia K4 and the Toyota Camry for cars, Ram 1500 and the Toyota Tacoma for trucks and Chevrolet Equinox EV and Hyundai Santa Fe for utility vehicles.
“What a way to kick off the new year. This is a tremendous honor,” said Josh Beckner, zone manager for Honda. “Civic Hybrid is a key part of our flexible approach to electrification, and we’re thrilled at the response that we’ve received from the media, from our dealers and, most importantly, our customers.”
Jim Baumbick, vice president of Advanced Product Development at Ford, also shared some gratitude on behalf of the car company as he accepted the award.
“Our team wakes up every day to serve our customers with passion, energy and just to put amazing products in their hands,” he said.
Petar Danilovic, senior vice president for Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen, accepted the award for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and also shared his pride that the car company was able to secure the award this year.
“I might be a little bit biased, but how many times do we have a true icon coming back to North America?” he asked. “The ID. Buzz is such a true icon for us, for folks and for the automotive world. It’s living up to its promise.”
