South America is Buried right now

South America is Buried right now

The 2024 winter season is in full swing in the Southern Hemisphere with historic early-season snowfall in Argentina and Chile, and even more snow forecasted.

As weird as that sounds the week before the 4th of July, many South American ski resorts have delayed their openings due to massive amounts of snowfall from back-to-back-to-back storms, making for the snowiest early season this century.

Valle Nevado, Chile, received several feet of snow last weekend. The mountain reported a storm total of 69 inches, (nice) bringing their snowfall total to six feet in the last 14 days.

The resort averages around 240 inches of snow per season. But this year, they’re already at 130″ and counting. The resort opened a stunning three weeks before expected on June 7th.

200 km North, Portillo, Chile reported 223 inches (18.7 ft) in the last 14 days. Originally slated to open for its 75th season on June 20th, a casual 100in storm delayed opening to the 26th. Another winter storm forecasted for this week has forced the resort to delay opening yet again until the 29th.

Over in Argentina, Las Leñas Ski Resort will also be opening on Saturday after an access road to the mountain was completely buried. Skiers will enjoy the 19 feet of snow reported at its 11,000-foot summit on its June 29th opening day.

If there’s ever been a time to send it down to South America, I would say it’s most definitely NOW.
