South America weather extremes are impacting crop production
A meteorologist says weather extremes in South America will likely reduce yields in key production areas.
Eric Snodgrass with Nutrien Ag Solutions tells Brownfield northern Brazil’s monsoon season ended about two weeks early. I’ve not yet heard how big of an impact that’s going to be, but normally,they need those rains to help with grain fill as we start to work towards the month of May and then into June when they’re going to harvest that Safrinha crop.”
While northern Brazil is getting less moisture, Snodgrass says southern Brazil, where they generally don’t grow a second crop has the opposite problem. “They have had in the last couple of weeks some places between eight and over twenty inches of rain, and today’s forecast models are projecting another four to eight inches of rain into that area, so that is a lot of area where the crop is being flooded out very late.” Snodgrass says will probably mean significant crop losses.
In Argentina, Snodgrass says weather has been good overall, but they’ve lowered their crop expectations based on pest pressure.
