An airline that primarily serves South American countries is adding up to 15 787 Dreamliners that Boeing Co. builds in North Charleston to expand its route network.

Chilean carrier LATAM Airlines Group said Oct. 28 it has reached an agreement  to buy 10 787-9 wide-bodies with an option to purchase five more depending on demand.

The order adds to the carrier’s fleet of 37 787-8 and 787-9 models. The jets will maximize capacity on the airline’s most popular routes and launch new service, including a nonstop flight to Sydney, Australia.

“The Boeing 787 is a much more efficient aircraft, allowing us to continue growing sustainably while reducing our carbon footprint as we drive the growth of our operations,” Ramiro Alfonsin, chief financial officer of LATAM Airlines Group, said in a written statement. “This order will enable us to receive at least two aircraft of this model each year from 2025 until the end of the decade.”

The deal is valued at nearly $3 billion at list prices, although customers typically negotiate discounts on contract prices.

The airline took delivery of its first Dreamliner, a 787-8 model, in August 2012 and took delivery of its latest 787-9 a year ago.

Mike Wilson, Boeing’s vice president of commercial sales for Latin America and the Caribbean, said the planemaker “appreciates LATAM’s continued confidence in the 787 Dreamliner family to further expand its international network from hubs in Santiago, Sao Paulo and Lima.”

Wilson said demand for air travel is continuing to increase in South America.

Boeing’s latest commercial market outlook forecasts air travel in Latin America will more than double over the next 20 years, growing 5 percent annually. Nearly 2,300 commercial aircraft deliveries are expected during that period, with the region’s fleet projected to grow to more than 3,000 by 2043.

In addition to South America, LATAM flies to five U.S. cities as well as destinations in Europe, Israel, Australia and South Africa.
